Least Tern colonies on buildings around Easton have been present for
many years. DNR is fully aware of them, and property owners have been very
cooperative. Years ago, there was a nesting colony on the roof of Easton
High School, but not now. Perhaps descendants of that colony are amongst
the large group that now uses the roof of the Giant Food Store as their
home. One local birder has counted over 150 Least Terns at that site in the
late summer when the little ones are also flying.
Giant Food has cooperated quite well, and carefully restricts access
to the roof during the nesting season. The only people allowed up there
would be occasional service mechanics for such things as heating or cooling
equipment where roof access might be involved. Each access door to the roof
carries a caution sign, noting presence of the birds and advising for
minimal disturbance of them.
A colony on Lowe's may be a new thing. I am not aware of that one,
but will check on it. Least Terns from the Giant Food colony may have
decided to expand their nesting territory.
