Where is this Giant Food Store where the Least Terns nest?
The Giant Food Store of Easton, home of many Least Terns, is east of
Rte 50, and very easy to find. If you are approaching Easton from the north
on Rte 50, proceed to Rte 328 which is also known as Matthewstown Road.
Turn left onto Matthewstown Road and proceed for one long block to the next
signal light, which will be Elliot Rd, and at that corner, go to the right.
Proceed for another long block to Teal Drive, and make a left onto Teal
Drive. At this point you will be traveling along the back side of the Giant
Food Store. Start listening for and watching for the Terns, most numerous
near the top of the buildings which will be on your right. On the left side
of Teal Drive are a few small rainwater collection ponds. Sometimes the
Terns use these as wash-up sites after bringing food to the young atop the
building. By parking near these ponds in the well-marked parking lot spaces,
you may get some close-up views, and will at least get a chance to watch the
terns to your heart's content.
The terns can also be viewed from the other side of the Giant Food
Store, using the usually busy parking lot of the store customers.
