Seven hours of VERY MUDDY trails along the Big Gunpowder Falls River in
Kingsville rewarded two stalwart Atlasers with:
-a pair of RED-EYED VIREOS
-a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, a first in any of my atlas blocks.
-a fledgling LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH with parent in attendance.
-a fledgling OVENBIRD w/parent in attendance.
-a pair of ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS flycatching, until eventually they showed
us the nest and the female settled in.
-a pair of OSPREY flying up and down the river, carrying nesting
material towards the west. Is anyone aware of an Osprey nest site on
the Big Gunpowder? This river basically flows east from the Loch
Raven Dam and passes through parts of the southern edge of the
Kingsville block, (officially Block 0754 White Marsh CE), so the
nest should be somewhere between Rt 95 and Loch Raven.
-and Wonder of Wonders:
a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD ----ON NEST!!! Way Cool!!!! :>
We decided to finish up by swinging up to Elkton for the McCandless
Kites and were rewarded with a great, close-overhead view of a
Mississippi Kite!
