I had a very nice father's day, starting with some Atlasing in southern
P.G. County in a previously unsurveyed block (Upper Marlboro, SE). I found
52 species in about 3.5 hours. Most species observed were to be expected,
with the exception of a BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER (one of seven warbler
species), singing with zest - perhaps he was enjoying father's day also. I
will be tracking this area and report it later to the County Coordinator.
When I arrived home I was greeted warmly by our children, and then had a
relaxing day in the yard, replacing our fencing. While I was out we had a
rare visitor - RED-HEADED WOODPECKER!! (an adult); only the second one
we've had in the yard in 6 years here. I watched it on and off while I
continued working for ~20 minutes, but it disappeared as quietly as it had
appeared. I thought it seemed to be curious - checking out many of our
mature trees, and even flying down to a bluebird box (on a pole) and
examining it out briefly. I also heard a second bird calling (making what
I call their chuckling call) once from our neighbor's yard, although the
bird I was watching did not respond to this call. A very pleasant day-
