I heard a Black-billed Cuckoo calling on the Woodland Trail at Chincoteague NWR on Friday morning; there were also three Yellow-billed Cuckoos there. It was quite a surprise to me. This was in an area that had no cicada emergence this year.

Gail, we had a Black-billed Cuckoo calling on our BBS route in
Wicomico County earlier this month. I looked back at the history of
the route and noted about 6 different years when the birds were
seen/heard down there. One of those years was 1987, the last cicada
invasion year.

Regarding bobwhites, we counted 18 on the route, higher than some
years but MUCH lower than the period from 1966 through late 1970s,
when 50 or more bobwhites were not unusual on that route.

Best,
Norm
