Hello All,
I spent yesterday morning atlasing in NW Dorchester Co., mainly on
Rhodesdale NE and Sharptown NW and touching on Sharptown CW and Rhodesdale
CE. I enjoyed the beautiful weather - at one point, I actually saw my
breath - in June! The first excellent find was a Louisiana Waterthrush on
Puckum Rd near Eldorado. Puckum Rd crosses a small stream just south of its
intersection with Wesley Rd. The bird was seen on both sides of the road.
Acadian Fly and Worm-Eating Warbler also present here. Puckum Rd is
excellent in its entirety. I have had 60+ atlas recordable species on this
road alone including Worm-Eating, Prothonotary, Black and White, Ovenbird,
Prairie Warb., Chat, Yellowthroat, both tanagers, House Wren.
My other excellent find was at the cutoff at the intersection of
Woodland Church Rd and Quail Rd (in DE, but part of the Sharptown CW block).
I was trying to upgrade a Scarlet Tanager I heard on the last visit here
when I heard what could have been a distant Black-billed Cuckoo. I jumped
out of the car only to see a hawk flying over. It turned out to be a
Broad-Winged Hawk, carrying a prey item no less. It quickly disappeared
into the woods to the NE. While it has been years since I have seen a Broad
Wing in the area, a nesting one is not unprecedented. There was a nest in
'96 or '97 about 3 miles further northeast along the Nanticoke. In
searching for the hawk to return, I forgot all about the cuckoo, but I never
heard anything else while I was waiting.

Good Birding,
