Birders,

It was a very pleasant morning on Saturday, June 19, when I led seven fine birders through the Granite Area of Patapsco Valley State Park. We tallied 49 of the species reported as known breeders in the area and added 3 others. The new birds included: a Cooper's Hawk, an American Redstart (found before the trip) and the Tree Swallow - heard only.

The Cooper's Hawk was found in a stand of conifers near the ball field. It is
possible that we disturbed it as it approached it's nest with prey. It flew back
and forth with a firm grip a smaller bird. We wanted to stay but decided to get
out of it's way. I'll check the site in a week or so.

We were thrilled with Yellow-breasted Chat, Prairie Warbler, Indigo Bunting, Field Sparrow and White-eyed Vireo singing from exposed perches. Fledglings were out begging and chasing adult birds - Pileated Woodpecker, White-eyed Vireo, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse and a Brown-headed Cowbird being fed by a Red-Eyed Vireo.

Birders attending: Irma Weinstein, Sherry Morell, Neil Rudofsky, Carol Schreter, Mark Linardi, Dave Taylor and John Dehnehy. Thank you for coming.
