Saw several interesting birds on the 4th of July as we hiked a portion of
the Appalachian Trail in Frederick and Washington counties, MD. We were
trying to get some miles hiked, birding only on the side, so this doesn't
cover nearly all of the species that might have been around. All of those
seen, except Red-Tail, were either with young, in pairs, or acting as if
they were guarding a nearby nest:

BLUE-HEADED VIREO - adult, with young.
        SCARLET TANAGER - pair
        WOOD THRUSH - single
        BLUE GROSBEAK - single
        EASTERN WOOD PEEWEE - heard
        RED-TAILED HAWK

Most of these are new additions to our "AT Bird list" of species seen
within sight of the trail, now at about 40.

        Other wildlife seen:
        BLACK SNAKE
        BLACK BEAR (Yikes!)
        WOODCHUCK
        MOLE, sp.
        WHITE-TAILED DEER

        Good Birding!
