I spent Sunday and Monday in western Maryland, mostly atlasing in the
Bittinger area of Garrett County (about 8 miles south of exit 19 on I-68).
The most productive spot was on Brenneman Rd along the south branch of the
Casselman River, where I confirmed Canada Warbler (FL) and Chestnut-sided
Warbler (FY) and also saw a male Black-throated Blue Warbler. This stretch
of road fronts Firefly Farms, private property where I also found Yellow-
billed Cuckoo, Acadian Flycatcher (not reported in last atlas), Hermit
Thrush, Cedar Waxwing, Black-throated Green Warbler, Black-and-white
Warbler, Ovenbird, Scarlet Tanager, and Eastern Meadowlark along with some
more common birds.

Another good spot in the block was at the intersection of Maynardier Ridge
Rd and Bear Hill Rd east of Bittinger. At least 2 more Yellow-billed
Cuckoos were here along with Magnolia Warbler, Black-throated Green arbler,
Blackburnian Warbler, and Ovenbird.

On Sunday morning, I made a few stops on the way up to Bittinger. A Black-
billed Cuckoo was calling near the Allegany County landfill on Burning
Mines Rd (state bird! finally!!). And lastly, the Pea Ridge Rd area in
Garrett reported by Stan Arnold for Henslow's Sparrows was magnificent,
very scenic in addition to having some nice birds. (Stan's directions are
in the archives from his post on June 16, 2003.)
