Naturalist Society. This tape was made Tuesday, July 6 at 4:30 p.m.

Top birds this week are *PURPLE GALLINULE in MD and SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER in VA.

Other birds of interest include PIED-BILLED GREBE, LEAST BITTERN,
night-herons, WHITE IBIS, SURF SCOTER, RUDDY DUCK, AMERICAN COOT,
MARBLED GODWIT, LEAST SANDPIPER, terns, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, COMMON
NIGHTHAWK, warblers and DICKCISSEL.

A *PURPLE GALLINULE, first spotted a few days ago, was relocated on
July 6 at the Oxbow Lake Preserve near Laurel in western Anne Arundel
Co, MD.

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER has been sighted around the Countryside
Golf Course in Roanoke, VA. On July 2, the flycatcher was seen on a
nest and a clutch of 5 eggs was confirmed. Birders who wish to visit
the golf course must check in at the clubhouse and be respectful of
the rules. Please keep your distance from the bird and stay out of
the way of the golfers.

A visit to a Breeding Bird Survey block in Queen Anne's Co, MD
revealed both PIED-BILLED GREBES and AMERICAN COOTS feeding young.
This is a first breeding record for Queen Anne's county for both
species.

A LEAST BITTERN was found at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on July
3. Birders enjoying a Sunday morning field trip to Dyke Marsh,
Fairfax Co, VA watched a LEAST BITTERN make a short flight over
cattails on July 5. Two more LEAST BITTERNS were calling from
Nanjemoy Creek marsh, Charles Co, MD on the same day.

An adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at Great Falls Park,
Montgomery Co on June 30. On July 1, an adult BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON was spotted at the second impoundment at Penneyfield Lock,
Montgomery Co. Two adults plus a juvenile were seen at both
Penneyfield Lock and Great Falls Park, Fairfax, VA on July 2. An
immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was observed at New Windsor,
Carroll Co, MD on July 3. An adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON flew
across the Little River Turnpike just west of the beltway in
Annandale, VA on July 4.

An immature male SURF SCOTER was just off the rocks at Island 4 on the
CBBT in VA on July 3. A pair of RUDDY DUCKS with ducklings was
spotted at Druid Park Lake in Baltimore on July 1 and 2.

A long weekend spent in the vicinity of the Chincoteague NWR, Accomack
Co, VA resulted in a viewing of eight MARBLED GODWITS on a sandbar
near Black Duck Marsh. Other sightings included GULL-BILLED TERNS
along the Wildlife Loop and two juvenile WHITE IBIS at Snow Goose
Pool, seen from the road to the beach.

A lone LEAST SANDPIPER graced the wetlands of Pickering Creek Audubon
Center, Talbot Co, MD on June 29 and 30.

A pair of COMMON TERNS was spotted defending a nest on a repaired part
of the concrete jetty in the Kent Narrows channel, Queen Anne's Co on
July 1. Scope views are possible from the boat landing off Wells Cove
Road past the Remax office.

The song of the YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO has been heard in the region with
reports from Greenridge State Park, Allegany Co, MD on June 30,
Meadowside Nature Center, Montgomery Co on July 3, Nanjemoy
Environmental Educational Center, Charles Co, Huntley Meadows Park and
Dyke Marsh, both in Fairfax Co, VA on July 5.

A COMMON NIGHTHAWK made an appearance at Great Falls Park, VA on July
2.

A pair of CERULEAN WARBLERS was sighted in Greenridge State Park on
June 30; a singing CERULEAN WARBLER was at McKee-Beshers WMA,
Montgomery Co on July 3. The Blue Mash Nature Trail in Montgomery Co
hosted a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT on July 2.

The DICKCISSELS remain at the intersection of Cherry Lane and Cedar
Lane in Caroline Co, MD with a sighting of a singing male and a
food-carrying female on June 29.

A pelagic trip is scheduled for August 28 out of Lewes, DE. For more
