Before you set out on the Trail, be sure to read A Walk in the
Woods:Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson. It's a terrific book
with "laugh-out-loud" passages.

Martha,
In fact I have read it twice, and it is on my "on-deck" list of books to
read again this summer, before I pass it along to my daughter. The other book,
Hiking the Appalachian Trail was written before Bryson's book, so it takes a
different look at the whole experience. Bryson's book really helped popularize
the trail though.
