I took my five month old daughter out for a walk Wednesday evening after
work. We got to share her first great-horned owls, both hooting and hunting. I
assume at least one was a young owl due to its reluctance to fly off as we
approached and the clumsiness of its pounce. One hooted constantly so Rowan got to
both see and hear them. Not sure if she gets much of a look at this age, but
I think she was at least able to see the movement as those large wings
flapped.
Steve,
If you don't already have it, you should pick up a copy of OWL MOON by Jane
Yolen (Amazon has it for under $12), a true children's classic. Both of you
would enjoy her bedtimes more after reading this to her, especially in light of
your recent adventure. And thanks for sharing your story with us. IMHO you
can't ever spend enough time with your children in pursuit of nature. It sounds
like she's off to a fine start as a naturalist (my youngest is off in a few
weeks to the University of Delaware to study Wildlife Conservation!). Enjoy
Rowan (love the name) while she is young...
