I took my five month old daughter out for a walk Wednesday evening after work. We got to share her first great-horned owls, both hooting and hunting. I assume at least one was a young owl due to its reluctance to fly off as we approached and the clumsiness of its pounce. One hooted constantly so Rowan got to both see and hear them. Not sure if she gets much of a look at this age, but I think she was at least able to see the movement as those large wings flapped.

Raptor dispersal is certainly underway. Reports of sharp-shinned hawks have come in from several places. Red-tailed youngsters litter roadside perches and fence row trees. The local kestrels have moved on.
