Folks

Yesterday I enjoyed a pair of recent fledgling Red-shouldered Hawks feeding for nearly an hour in our back yard. One young bird caught a vole, the other was probably feeding on the numerous young Fowler's Toads since it was unable to catch a mammal for some time. It eventually caught something like a mouse (I could not see the captured animal well), took it to the woods, and finished breakfast. Very attractive animals and seemed to be hunting together. Better then TV.

Later in the morning, a young or female Wild Turkey decided to visit the driveway. It allowed me to get pretty close with the camera for close shots - leading me to believe it was a young and dumb bird. It won't survive long in the wild with that attitude toward humans. The turkey was #115 for the year yard list.

Around 5:30 PM a female adult Cooper's Hawk rushed through hunting a Morning Dove. With a male Cooper's Hawk here a week or so ago, it is likely there is a nest site in this atlas block.

Purple Martins continue to migrate over the house heading back to South America. They have been doing this for a couple weeks now.

Enjoy the cool weather. The birding season will change shortly.
