This topic reminds me of moving a Luna Moth from the path my dogs take to get
in and out of my porch door one day, a few Mays back. I picked it up,
admired it for a spell, and then put it on a maple tree. It didn't take, and I
watched this gorgeous green ghost go floating off into the spring-green woods
around my house. It was somewhat magical, the spectrum of greens, watching this
moth stumbling about through the trees. I was jolted from this very serene
moment by a little greenish flycatcher hitting this moth hard, dislodging a pair
of hindwings. The Acadian took the green snack to a thin branch a few feet
away, where it choked down the entire body of the moth, sending the other two
wings floating to the ground below.
Often I find moth wings around my house, either products of birds or bats.
For whatever reason, when they're the wings of the bigger and prettier moths,
well it just is a bit more unsettling, for no good reason.
Cheers,
Todd
