Phil and all,
The web sites at the College of DuPage and NCAR,
http://weather.cod.edu/analysis/radar.main.html
and http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/, allow you to view ALSO velocity
data from individual radars. These can demonstrate actual southward (in
the fall) movements. It also allows viewing reflectivity and velocity
data at several of the lowest angles of the radar beam. I am not aware
of any site that produces mosaics of velocity data, so one has to look
at individual radar sites.
When you are at the NCAR site, you could check the surface data to
see what the winds are at the surface observation sites. They you could
view data from the UPPER AIR selection to determine wind
speeds at different levels in the atmosphere.
When you are at the College of DuPage site, you can actually view
the VAD display, which estimates the wind as a function of height.
These data also include the effects of the actual migrating birds at
this time. In the future, when dual polarization in included in the NWS
radars (5 years?) then algorithms will be used to eliminate migrating
insects or birds from these data! Meteorologists need to know the real
atmospheric data, not the migrating birds! Particularly models!
