Hi Gene:

I use and like the Gitzo carbon-fiber tripods. I currently use the 1227
3-section model. I originally bought the 1228 4-section model since it
retracted to a shorter length and stood a little higher when the legs were
fully extended (I am 6 feet tall). However, the 4-section turned out to not
be the best choice for me ... (1) when you remove the center column for
travelling, the difference in length is not significant, both models fit
into any suit case/duffel without problem; (2) I do a lot of set-up/fold up
on my Alaska tours and on other birding trips; having to deal with only
three sections vs. four makes a difference; (3) I generally extend the
center column a few inches on the 1227 to make my straight scope level for
my eyes, although in a hurry, I can easily use it without taking second or
two to extend the center column. Bottom line, for me the three section
model works best.

Some people don't like the twist collars on the leg sections, but I have
become very comfortable with operating them quickly ... and they are very
reliable--no additional mechanisms to break or protrusions to get snagged
on anything.

I have had no problems with the tripods at all and certainly recommend them.

Hope this helps ... usual disclaimers ...

Phil
