When you extend the 1227 center support you effectively have a monopod on a
tripod.  I just bought Gwen the 1228 and will not likely extend the center
support.  This is more critical on heavy camera lenses, but may not be so on
smaller spotting scopes.  The best and most stable is the 1348 or 1349,
which I use with a Wimbley head for the 500 f 4 monster lens.  The carbon
fiber tripods are mucho expensive but worth it.
