I joined Parke John and Sam Dyke at the Curlew Sandpiper site on Assateague this morning. We had not seen the Curlew Sand by the time I left but we did find two Buff-breasted Sandpipers. Most of the shorebird activity was on the bayside flats at about the 7.5 marker. The first Buff-breast was seen about 1015 and stayed a few minutes before flying south with a flock of peeps. The second flew in alone from the north about 1100 and also stayed a few minutes before departing southward with a small flock of peeps. We also saw Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Piping Plover (1), Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, Willet (all appeared to be Eastern), Spotted Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Semi Sand, Western Sand, Least Sand, Pectoral Sand, and Short-billed Dowitcher there. Since I headed back before noon other good birds may have been seen after I left.
On the way home I stopped at the Hurlock WWTP. The juvenile Red-necked Phalarope was still there. It was in the NE pond and close to where the dikes cross.
