This morning (Sept 2nd) I checked out the 'plowed field' near
Hurlock, and as one might expect, most of the shorebirds had gone elsewhere.
However, they surely may return, or others may come in this evening, for
that site is great as a night-time resting place. And it should be really
great if Hurricane Frances brings rain to the area this weekend.
Birds present this morning included 15+ Horned Larks, and as a
special bonus, a single UPLAND SANDPIPER showed up to allow a 'watch me as
long as you want' viewing experience.
Thanks to Jim and Hans for drawing attention to this spot. It is on
Route 307 less than a quarter mile northeast of Hurlock. Operators of one
of the Dorchester County pick-ups that stopped to ask what I was doing told
me that the field is actually planted in spinach, which is just now emerging
from the soil. (The field looked quite bare to me, but the important thing
is that the birds seem to like it.)
