Message posted for Jim Green from Montgomery County.
After leading a Montg.County MOS trip from 7:30 til 12:00noon mostly along the C & O Canal between Violettes' Lock and north above Riley's Lock to the Northern end of the turning basin ( in which we saw 12 warbler species) , Helen Patton, Gemma Radko & Jim Green went first to Lily Ponds hoping for some decent diversity of shorebirds. Unfortunately all we encountered was 7 least & 1 semipalmated sandpipers. Then we headed for Harney Ponds in Northern Frederick County. After following the directions of various posters to simplify finding the Baird's Sandpiper, we walked around the left side of the impoundment which was 90% dry and found some shorebird activity other than Killdeer & Least Sandpiper. After 20 minutes we found the Baird's Sandpiper in very fresh plumage. After scanning (with the sun behind us) we located all of the usual birds that have already been reported here. Then, just before we started back to Helen's I saw first one and then a second Amer. Golden Plover . To my knowledge the Amer. Golden Plovers have not been reported here with the Baird's et. al. If I am mistaken PLEASE ignore this email, however if I am correct I would like Dave to pass the info onto the OSPREY network and Gary to email enmass to FREDERICK COUNTY members.
Here is a total of species seen by the 3 of us at the Harney Pond:
3 Greater & 4 Lesser Yellowlegs 50 Killdeer 40 Lesser Sandpipers
2 Pectoral Sandpipers 5 Semipalmated Sandpipers
1 Baird's Sandpiper 2 American Golden Plovers
Dave & Gary thanks for passing this on; any ????'s call me at work on Thurs. & 301-948-1518.
