"Safe harbor of birding" is an illusion.

Politics does not exist in a standalone vacuum. It exists in all aspects of our lives because it influences our quality of life, our economic standing, and the condition of the world we live in. Choosing to ignore this connection and not talking about it does not serve the causes we love, such as bird conservation. If you're not outraged over what this administration has done (a bunch of kooks who don't even represent core Republican values), and not speaking out against  their inane environmental policies, you're simply not paying attention or living in a dream world.
