People interested in migrant birds or bird art may wish to plan a visit
to Sidwell Friends School during the month of October. The school is
hosting an exhibition of work by Jonathan Alderfer entitled "On the
Wing: Fifty Portraits of Migratory Birds."

The paintings (watercolor and gouache on paper) were prepared for the
Western Hemisphere side of the 2004 National Geographic Society Bird
Migration Map, which was included in the April issue. Each depicts a
bird in flight. The 50 species covered include waterfowl, seabirds,
birds of prey, shorebirds, hummingbirds, and passerines. Among them are
neotropical migrants that enliven our springs, winter visitors, and a
number of South American species that head north when the weather cools
on their breeding grounds.

The exhibition is at the Daryl Reich Rubenstein Gallery in the Kogod
Center for the Arts, Sidwell Friends School, 3825 Wisconsin Ave NW,
Washington, DC 20016.

An opening reception will be held 5 to 7 PM on Saturday, 2 October.
Gallery hours for the remainder of the month are 8:30 Am to 3:30 PM,
Monday through Friday or by appointment (202 537 8141, ext 3; Linda
Swan, Arts Center Director).
