Didn't get down to the Park until after 9am, but when I reached the Maintenance Yard a COOPER's Hawk flew off, seemingly disturbed by my presence. Shortly after, a RED-SHOULDERED Hawk, juvenile, took flight, calling from back up toward the stables, but stayed in the area, soaring, offering great views. It was later joined by an adult RED-SHOULDERED, and as I lay on the ground observing it, 3 RED-TAILED Hawks were soaring high above it. The Red-shouldered, calling, flew up and challenged one of the Red-taileds.
Awesome.
Also seen in the yard were a MAGNOLIA Warbler and a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. A HOUSE WREN kept up quite a chatter.
Up by the stables, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was on the bare tree by the open area north of the stables, along with a SCARLET TANAGER and 2 WHITE-THROATED Sparrows.
Earlier, I had seen a PILEATED WOODPECKER in the 17/18 Picnic area, along with GREY CATBIRDS and more White-Throated Sparrows.
Good birding,
Frank Powers
