Hi all,
We had a very hard day of sitting, and finally gave up at the 11th hour (so
to speak). Jim "Iron Man" Green was there ahead of me by 10 minutes and had
already tallied Canada Goose at 6am. We sat together throughout the day until
5:30 when we packed it in, having very few new species in the long afternoon
hours after about 1:30 or so. A group of 10 of us (some stayed briefly,
others longer) tallied 52 species, about 3 less than last year. From 1:30-5:30 we
picked up only 2 new species; Fish Crow and Red-winged Blackbird. Our #50
bird came at 1:30 when a very beautiful Osprey came in and landed in the trees
right in front of us and stayed for a while.
Other highlights (in no particular order) were: Barred Owl, BROAD-WINGED
HAWK ( a single bird coming out of the woods and flying directly off, early),
Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, 3
different Bald Eagles (the last one an adult which soared right over our small
circle!), all the woodpeckers except Red-headed (sapsucker is a new species for
our Big Sit, I think), Black-throated Green Warbler and Yellow-rumped
Warbler, both kinglets, Gray Catbirds, many kingfishers, Chimney Swifts, DC
Cormorants. Missing were any ducks except Mallard and Wood Duck, and sparrows except
for Song. We did particularly well with raptors, so a new name may be in
order for our team...
The Team: Rick Sussman, Jim Green, Linda Friedland, Gemma Radko, Lydia
Schindler, Tony and Cynthia Mead, Janet Millenson, Tom Marko, and Jennifer ?
(sorry J I forgot your last name).
