Arrived a little after the rain had stopped. Checked the
impoundments, then walked along Hunting Quarter Rd. to the center parking
lot, then south to the towpath after investigating why crows were calling so
much in the easternmost field, to Horsepen Hiker-Biker and back to the
impoundments.
Despite the damp and cool conditions it was a fairly productive day-
42 species. Highlights were a somewhat late Green Heron,2 Barred Owls
getting ready for Halloween, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (first one of the
season), 13 Northern Flickers, 3 Winter Wrens, 5 Golden-crowned Kinglets, 8
Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 20 E. Bluebirds, 30 Cedar Waxwings (relatively scarce
this year), 48 Myrtle Warblers, 5 Yellow Palm Warblers, 28 Swamp Sparrows,
at least 15 Rusty Blackbirds, one Purple Finch, and 94 Am. Goldfinch.
For anybody who is interested in complete list in taxonomic order go
EBIRD www.ebird.org
select View & Explore data, then all e-bird observations, then the Hotspots
in Maryland, select Hughes Hollow. For the year there are 56 checklists and
50 of them are mine. I still have a few to enter.
