Hi Folks!
Ed Boyd & I arrived at Pt.Lookout this morning at about 7:30. Within 5
minutes of our arrival Ed spotted 3 large mostly white birds heading up the
Potomac .... 3 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS! While I was scoping those I heard a sound
and turned..as did Ed....and we both yelled COMMON REDPOLLS!!! as a flock
of 9 headed south past the lighthouse and onwards towards Virginia.
During the next hour and a half at the point we picked up 4 Pine Siskins, 2
Red-bellied Woodpeckers, a Red-headed Woodpecker and [amazing to me] a Brown-headed
Nuthatch that seemed to want to join the woodpeckers for the hop south
across the mouth of the Potomac but like the Blue Jays turned back in the face of
a SW wind. The Great Cormorants were on their usual perch on the channel
marked south of the point. There was a small but steady stream of migrating
Myrtle Warblers, most returning back to the north rather than head into the
wind. Among these high up were two other warblers that by chip not and plumage
appeared to be Yellow Warblers.
Birding in the picnic area and by Fort Lincoln was very slow. In the fields
off of Cornfield Harbor Road we found a flock of 8 Chipping Sparrows and
near by an immature White-crowned and 2 Lincoln's Sparrows.
After that it was time for crab cakes and a few drafts at the Seabreeze
while Shrimpy snoozed on one of the pilings.
All in all, a nice day.
Good Birding!
