Folks

Yesterday I had five Pine Siskins (photos) and five Purple Finches return to the feeders at the house in Waldorf, MD. Also, one Sharp-shinned Hawk and one Red-shouldered Hawk were around. On Friday I observed the Red-shouldered Hawk eat a Short-tailed Shrew. Interesting!

Other birds of note were about 35 Cedar Waxwings feeding on the Black Gum berries with a larger flock of American Robins coming and going. Two Yellow-shafted Flicker were also occasionally eating these fruit. The young Yellow-bellied Sapsucker seemed to prefer the red fruit of the Magnolia Grandaflora tree.

One Yellow-rumped Warbler chipped as it flew over and the usual suspects were present.

Today we went to St. Mary's Elm Environmental area in St. Mary's county south of Lenardtown. Lots of Common Loons, a few Horned Grebe, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Black and Surf Scoters in smaller numbers, and a few Common Goldeneyes. One Yellow-bellied Sapsucker young was present and a few Yellow-crowned Kinglets. At least two Bald Eagles were also in the area.

We then went to Point Lookout, but much too late to see all the stuff Jim and Ed saw/heard. We saw three species of butterflies - Buckeye, Cloudless Sulfer, and Monarch - and Sherman Sutter.

A lovely day if even if no rare birds were found.

George
