A juvenile Golden Eagle was spotted at the Cromwell Valley Park Hawkwatch today, Monday,
Nov. 1st 2004. I first saw the bird coming from the north-east, just ahead of a group of 5
Turkey Vultures. As it approached the watch site the Golden made one fairly quick circle in
the sky, showing distinct white patches on it's inner primaries and inner tail. The Eagle then
headed south-southwest with the TVs following close behind! Hmmmm? The time was 11:
35am.
This is our first GE seen in several years. Several watch sites in PA are getting good numbers
since mid-October or so (Waggonners Gap). Four or more Golden Eagles are known to have
spent at least part of the last several winters at Blackwater NWR in Dorchester County (see
G.A. Inskip's article in THE MARYLAND YELLOWTHROAT NOV./DEC. 2004). The GE population
appears to be increasing here on the east coast.
