Les,
You'd be amazed. For those who aren't aware, there is a small elk herd
in (believe it or not) Elk County, PA. Every year some nut brings a dead one
to a deer check-in station thinking he has nailed the biggest whitetail in
history. Elk average 800-900 lbs. A good whitetail buck might hit 300. The
nut is promptly arrested by the game cops because it is very illegal to
blast the elk, who were transplanted from out west around the turn of the
century (the 20th, not the 21st). I know this will rile some blood, but
hunters never were known for their intelligence. How anyone smart enough to
buy a license would hunt out there and not know about the much publicized
elk is beyond me.
So this puts the crane thing in perspective.
    Jerry

PS, If anyone wants the location of the elk herd, just pull out a PA map and
locate the towns of Emporium and St Mary's in north-west-central part of the
state. The elk are between these 2 towns. I've seen some of them. They are a
popular viewing spectacle up there.
