After Walter Ellison's field trip to see waterfowl in Kent County yesterday (11-20-04) Bill Ellis and I headed to the eastern part of the county to look for grassland birds. An area which has been productive in the past is just south of Massey on Walnut Tree Road. We found about 200 Horned Larks in the field on the south side of the road and about 100-200 yards east of the railroad crossing, opposite a hunter's blind on the north side of the road. In the flock were one or two Lapland Longspurs and three Snow Buntings. I got the impression the hunter did not like us being there. He fired off a few shots at nothing in particular. Part of the flock took off but settled into the same area again.
