While visiting Red Bank Battlefield Park in National Park, NJ last Thursday,
I observed a Cackling Goose along the shoreline of the Delaware River. The
goose was slightly larger and bulkier than a Mallard (I almost overlooked
the bird because it was swimming with a group of Mallards). It had a
shorter neck and smaller bill relative to a Canada and a dark head that
completely lacked the distinctive white cheeks of a Canada. Was this
Cackling Goose more than likely the Richardson's subspecies, Branta
hutchinsii hutchinsii? Nevertheless, the Cackling Goose was a life bird for
me.
