There have been a lot of emails on the identification of different forms of Cackling Goose (including Richardson's), and its separation from the "Lesser" Canada, recently on the ID-Frontiers mailing list. These emails have included links to photos of live birds or skin collections, all of which I've found very educational. To find this go to: http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/FRID.html. I am pretty sure you can also search the archives for this list as you can with the other birding mailing lists.

On a totally different note, we are still getting a Red-breasted Nuthatch at our feeder in Cabin John (Mont. Co.) and even had that bird on the feeder at exactly the same time as Purple Finch and Pine Siskin at the weekend - not something I think I will see often in our yard.

While visiting Red Bank Battlefield Park in National Park, NJ last Thursday,
I observed a Cackling Goose along the shoreline of the Delaware River. The
goose was slightly larger and bulkier than a Mallard (I almost overlooked
the bird because it was swimming with a group of Mallards).
