Out on the Potomac River between Riley's and Violette's locks early this
afternoon were:
Horned Grebes - 3
Green-winged teal
Bufflehead
Hooded Merganser
Bonaparte's Gulls - 9
Ring-billed Gull - 1
Great Blue Heron
The Bonaparte's seemed to be feeding while sitting on the water just
above the rapids at Violette's Lock. This is first time I have seen
them in nonbreeding plumage. Their movements are almost phalarope-ish.
Not a spin, but sorta of a quick pivot. Interesting to watch.
On my way back to home stopped at Lake Placid in Gaithersburg:
Canada Geese
Mallards
Ring-necked Ducks - about 75 (largest number I've seen on
this small body of water over past 2 years)
Common Goldeneye - 2 females
American Coot
Happy Thanksgiving to all,
