Hairy Woodpeckers seem to need larger wooded lots. Perhaps all the
development over the past decade has reduced their numbers. I have several
resident HAWPs I feed peanut butter, but the same development dilemma is
encroaching on my space. I don't know how much longer this species will be
a regular at the house. Learn the call - a sharp, loud "pick" note - that
will help locate them. Look and listen in the larger hardwood lots. If you
find Pileated, you may find HAWPs.
Good luck.
