Well stated, George. The Hairys do seem to prefer the larger
woodlands down here. All three of my Atlas Blocks have easily yielded
confirmations of nesting Hairy Woodpeckers - but all confirmations have been
either in or near hardwood groves of from 50 to 200 acres. The Hairy
Woodpeckers visit my own 5-acre plot, but do not nest here. Their nesting
sites are in the deeper woods about 1/2 mile away from my feeders.
Where woodlands are invaded by housing, I wonder what the level of
retained woodland density must be in order for the Hairy Woodpeckers to not
be pushed out. The woodlands mentioned for my Atlas Blocks are devoid of
housing -- and at least two of those tracts are scheduled to surely stay
that way.
