I'm saddened to hear of Luther's passing. He was the last of a line
of true gentlemen who never looked down on anyone and who never
failed to lighten one's load with his amazing stories of his
adventures in the field.

In the years that I knew Luther he never failed to greet me with a
twinkle in his eyes and a wonderful story on his lips. And of all
those stories I heard from Luther over the years, I can honestly say
that I never heard him repeat himself even once.

As President of MOS I had the privilege of presenting Luther with a
certificate in honor of his 85th birthday, naming him "Maryland's
Birder Plenipotentiary." He took a childlike delight in this silly
title and it pleased me to see him so pleased by the turnout of
those who came to celebrate his incredible life with him.

I'm sorry he's gone but glad that I had the privilege of knowing
him, albeit only in his later years. He must have been hell on
wheels in his youth.
