How did you determine your Red-headed Woodpecker was a female? I am unaware
of any substantial sexual dimorphism in this species. Woodpeckers , An
Identification Guide to the Woodpeckers of the World by Winkler, Christie
and Nurney describe the "sexes alike in all plumages, but female very
slightly smaller." You only reported one bird. Juveniles and adults are
easily separable but not adults. Any help you can provide to the listers
would be appreciated.
