I can't even believe it. I had a White-winged Crossbill in my feeder this morning.
I went out side to brush off the snow and fill the feeders. In the back yard I kept
hearing a jeet jeet, jeet jeet, almost Winter Wren like. That is what I almost except
that it was other than I just didn't like the sound of it for a Winter Wren. When I was done
I came in turned around and the birds had already landed in the feeders and deck. The
cowbirds were feeding on my corner feeder and I noticed a slightly smaller bird in with
the 3 or 4 cowbirds. IT had white wing bars. 2 big ones long oval shaped they appeared.
The first thought that popped in my head was Evening Grosbeak. But there was no yellow
and not the right shape or color. Then siskin, to big and wrong wing bars and color. Bomb
I then saw the Cross beak. My feeder is only 10 feet from the window. I flew thru the air
to grab my camera. came back 2 seconds later and it and everything else was gone.
I searched the trees thru my windows and there was a Sharpie sitting in a tree. I ran out
side clapping my hands. I had my own selfish reasons for denying the bird from a meal.
He flew off. The Crossbill has not been back. NO PICTURE. NO PROOF Other than my
Description. I am HOPEFULLY WAITING for this bird to come back. I have seen and heard
this bird in the past. Its been so long that I forgot the call. Its all too familiar now.
All of this happened at 7:45 this morning.
