MD Osprey:
Naturally, this is a new species for Maryland.
FYI ...Here's the species account from the ABA Checklist (sixth edition, 2002):
Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus
(Breeds Eurasia. Partly migratory. Winters from s. portion of breeding
range s. to Asia Minor, the Indian subcontinent, and northern
se. Asia.) Casual in e. Canada and ne. United States, with flights in
December 1927 and January 1966 accounting for most
records. About 30 isolated records (Bagg 1967), mostly from late fall to
early winter, include about 14 singles since 1988; one near
West Union, Adams Co., OH, 19–20 December 1994 (AFN 49:153) is the
westernmost. There are a handful of records for the se.
United States and an additional four records from the West Indies.
The AOU Checklist (7th edition, 1998) provides the following:
Casual to northeastern North America from Baffin Island, Labrador, and
Newfoundland south through southern Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward
Island, Nova Scotia, and New England to New York. Accidental in Ohio, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Bermuda, the Bahamas (Hog Island), Puerto Rico,
and Barbados.
[Interesting that the Delaware record is not listed. I saw one there near
Bombay Hook NWR on 7/7/1996.]
