Just in case people missed this on VA-BIRD , I am reposting John Fox's
firsthand account of the successful conclusion to his trip to Frederick
Co for the Lapwing (the Washington Post reporter left too early ....)

Optimists considering a search this weekend might gain some hope from
the fact that the Lapwing on Long Island, New York, in early 1995 was
occasionally missed for intervals of several days during the course of
its 6 week stay. (Pessimists may regret that such misses reflect that
fact that the bird can move around over a considerable area.)

Cheers and good birds,

Va-birders,

The Lapwing was seen this afternoon by ~15 birders, from 4:45 until at
least 5:30 when I left. It was on Blacks Mill Rd. all alone in the
middle of the field on the right as you drive from Rt. 550, a yellow 15
MPH sign is at the mid-point of the field. I got a look at it flying
earlier in the day while driving, one of those "What's that bird, oh
crap don't wreck the car" moments!

There were a couple undergrads from WVU just having the time of their
lives, with stories of chasing the recent Snowy Owl and Varied Thrush
during finals week and getting back just in time to take a test. A
couple local moms with two kids in the back seat saw the story in the
paper and were out looking around, and all of them got a scope look. A
guy from Florida and one from South Carolina were rewarded. The Sheriff
even pulled up on Graceham Rd, with 8 cars half in the lane, rolled down
the window, and said "Has anyone seen the bird?" It was a cool day and a
fabulous bird!

Good Birding.
