I think it is both. I suppose it depends on the turnout at the meeting and who speaks with the loudest voice.
It is my understanding that there is no way the superintendent will allow a hunt of deer in the park and funding for immunocontraception fell through this year. There is nothing in the current budget to allow for that kind of work.

I've asked staff if they have a plan for the vegetation -- in terms of replacing trees that fall due to age and weather, as the deer are browsing on all the young plant shoots, eating the acorns, and retarding any new growth. My reply was a sad laugh. The only kind of long term plans in the works at this point is on traffic.

My long-term concern for the park is not only the lack of ground cover for ground nesters, but also for the replacement of old trees that provide large trunks for nesting habitat for Pileated Woodpeckers and Barred Owls. It is my assertion that RCP has matured to allow for more of these nesters since the last Atlas, but this habitat may not exist in 100 years if we don't stop the deer here and elsewhere from eating all of the new growth. But, there are so many other problems to consider as well, including invasive species. Where do we begin with the laundry list of problems? Well, that is more than my two cents worth.

I thought the focus of this meeting was not on coyotes but on the problems caused by deer. Their overbrowsing damages bird habitat.
