Yesterday, I was the interpreter on one of the tram tours at the National Wildlife Visitor Center on the Patuxent Research Refuge. Out at Mabbott Pond, a sub-adult Bald Eagle (just beginning to show white on tail) was seen soaring overhead. On the pond were about a dozen Hooded Mergansers and 2 Am.Black Ducks. When we arrived back at the parking lot, two Bald Eagles (one adult and a juvenile) were intereacting...the adult flew towards the juvenile in an unthreatening way and seemed to be escorting it away.

We go days on end without seeing our 2 resident adult eagles, and when we have an event (Refuge System Birthday celebration in this case), one or more eagles appear...like they want to be part of the day's activities. I'll be watching for them again today while I'm at the refuge.

Good birding!
