Lee & I arrived at Pickering Creek about 6:00pm. As we drove into Audubon
Lane we saw the NORTHERN SHRIKE perched on a non-sycamore deciduous tree
on the left of the lane past the observation blind. We had about 5
minutes of excellent viewing using the car as a blind. The bird flushed
once and moved farther down the lane. As I approached again in the car,
it flew across the lane and may or may not have continued across the
field. We didn't relocate it, but didn't spend much time trying, as we
were also on the hunt for woodcock. We parked behind the barn at the end
of the lane at 6:20, walked west into the next field and turned right
along the hedgerow. This cut down on the frog noise a bit. The WOODCOCK
began calling from that field, the field between the creek and the little
wetland, and from the grassy area around the observation platform at about
6:40. Also GREAT HORNED OWLS in the woods. We were able to stalk one
woodcock to within about 20 feet by moving when noisy geese were flying
over. Lots of frogs, don't know what kind, but sounded like 3 based on
variations in calls. Lovely, nearly still evening.

Other birds:
wood duck
mallard
mute swan
Canada goose
Am. robin
turkey vulture
no. mockingbird
no. cardinal
white-throated sparrow

Good birding -
