Five hearty souls showed up for the first of this spring's Howard County
bird walks around Centennial Lake in Howard. A light fog was in place, with
a bit of light rain later own. Runner/Walker traffic was heavy for much of
the walk, as an organized fund-raising walk was going on. As a result, we
had what I think is a new low for number of species on the spring Centennial
walks, a mere 30 species. But there were some good ones. Species reported
earlier in the week, such as pintail and snipe, were not evident. Have the
last of the pintails finally moved on? And the swallows have yet to get here!

Aside from usual suspects, the highlights were:

Common Merganser - 2 females
Osprey - 1 (one of our very few migrants)
Eastern Phoebe - 1 (another migrant?)
Eastern Towhee - 2 (okay, a usual suspect, but always so delightful to see)
Field Sparrow - 5 (can be hard to find in Centennial)
Fox Sparrow - 4 (including two singers)

The next Centennial walk will be on March 27, Easter Sunday, led by Bonnie
Ott. Meet at 08:00 at the western entrance.
