Five Bald Eagles were seen at Loch Raven Reservoir within a one hour period on Sat. 3-19. Three
were adults, one was a first year bird and another a 3rd year bird. Two of the adults put on a
spectacular show as they chased, dove at each other, and flew in unison. They then separated and
flew off in different directions without ever making physical contact. Only the 3rd year bird
appeared to be migrating north.
One Red-shouldered Hawk escorted a migrant (?) Red-tailed Hawk off it's territory before shooting
straight down into a patch of woods. Several other high flying Red-tails were migrating north,
while 3 or 4 others were probably residents. All this was seen between 10:15am and 11:00am.
Two Great Horned Owl nests in the area were intact and active, the first, a cavity nest, with 3
young, the second,a stick nest, with two young. A third G H Owl nest in the area I plan checking
on Sunday.
Three species of songbirds that should be heading north very soon were still in the watershed-
Brown Creepers-4 or 5
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker-1
Juncos-numerous
Good birding to all
