Since most of the birds in Iceland are of palearctic origin, the best field
guides are those for Europe -- my personal favorite in the Svensson (text)
and Mullarney (illustrations) Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and
Europe. It is available from the ANS bookstore and from ABA. This guide,
btw, is considered by many to be the best field guide ever for anywhere, and
a model of "multum in parvo."
In fact, the book is useful for Maryland birders as it is quite good for
species which are of regular occurrence or which represent potential
vagrants to this region, e.g. the races (species?) of Brant, other
waterfowl, shorebirds, terns, gulls, seabirds etc.
