I just got the word from Brian Sullivan that the Northern Lapwing has been
added to the Maryland checklist on eBird. http://www.ebird.org/content/
eBird is a joint project of Audubon and Cornell Lab of Ornithology where
birders enter their checklists online. The data can be used by citizens and
scientists to track species over time and geography. I like it because I
feel like I am doing my little part for the greater good. "Citizen Science"
some call it; make your counts count! It is free, no software to buy, and it
is web-based, so if your hard drive dies, you won't lose all your data.
This June eBird will be updating to Version 2, with added capabilities,
including the ability to create a life-list. If there is enough interest
there could be a Maryland eBird regional application much like the Vermont,
Texas and Mass eBirds. Check it out.
