A colleague of mine has approached me about a "cute little bird" which nests in her bird house. It seems it has already begun to carry wood chips into the hole where it nested last year.

I was excited to hear about its success last year, especially since this bird is in one of my blocks. She brought me a very clear photo of a young nuthatch which had just been rescued from a cat and the photo has "Jun24 04" printed on the back. There is also a photo of the bird sticking its beak out of a very boutiquey bird house which has about 4 entrances.

It began its carting of nest material in on the 30 march this year. I note that this is not even an early date, but the safe dates are not til May. During the last atlas there were no Confirmed White-breasted Nuthatch nesting records in Calvert County, which interests my friend Jean, who promises to collect more data. She has found some previously unrecorded fossil species (one named after her) but is not used to recording bird data.
