I just got back from my weekly birdwatching - I didn't think I would get to
go because of the storms they are predicting. But I had a great day!
There were lots of Chipping Sparrows, and more White-Throated Sparrows than
I had seen before. It seems like we should be expecting them to leave? I saw
lots of Common Flickers and more Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (at one point one of
them was 5-6 feet away from me). There were Wood Ducks (2 males, 1 female)
in some flood puddles at the edge between a field and the woods. I am seeing
more and more Brown Headed Cowbirds.
The highlights were a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (as far as I could tell, but it
definitely had a yellow patch on top of a black patch just under its
shoulder and was striped otherwise) and a SCARLET TANAGER. They are both
life birds for me and I was so excited to see the Scarlet Tanager I couldn't
hold my binoculars still!
As far as bluebird boxes go, I have two nests with 5 eggs each, and today I
managed to scare the birds out of the boxes while I was standing right
there.
A good day (for me anyway, as a beginner), glad I could fit it in before
the (supposed) storms.
